Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and chairman of Dangote Group, has pledged a record-breaking N8 billion ($5.3 million) toward the construction of the IBB Presidential Library, the largest single donation made at the high-profile fundraising event.
The announcement was made at the launch of former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s autobiography at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The event, which drew Nigeria’s top business leaders and political elites, doubled as a fundraising platform for the IBB Presidential Library, a landmark project designed to document Nigeria’s military and political history.
Dangote Credits Babangida’s Policies for Nigeria’s Private Sector Growth
Speaking at the event, Dangote credited Babangida’s economic policies—particularly the abolition of import licenses—as a defining factor in Nigeria’s private-sector growth.
“If you’re successful in business today, you owe it to IBB,” Dangote said, acknowledging how Babangida’s economic liberalization policies positioned Nigeria as a hub for private-sector-driven development.
He highlighted how these policies transformed Nigeria’s economic structure, shifting from government dominance to a model where the private sector now contributes 85% of GDP, while the government accounts for only 15%.
Dangote’s pledge will be distributed over four years, with N2 billion ($1.33 million) committed annually, reinforcing his long-term support for preserving Nigeria’s leadership history.
Major Donors & Nigeria’s Business Elite Rally Behind the Project
Dangote’s donation led a night of major contributions from Nigeria’s wealthiest individuals and top corporate executives:

IBB Presidential Library: A Legacy Project for Nigeria’s History
Once completed, the IBB Presidential Library will be Nigeria’s second, following the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.
Modeled after global presidential libraries, the institution will serve as a historical archive, preserving records of Babangida’s eight-year rule, military governance, and Nigeria’s economic and political evolution.
This initiative underscores how Nigeria’s billionaire class is increasingly using philanthropy to shape national history, reinforcing their influence beyond business and into legacy-building for future generations.
Dangote’s contribution, along with those of Rabiu, Danjuma, and other top business figures, highlights the growing role of Nigeria’s private sector in preserving the country’s heritage, ensuring that the economic and political transformations of past decades are properly documented for the future.
