In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry, Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, founded by Nigerian business magnate Stella Okoli, is set to launch a $23 million Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) production plant. Slated to begin operations in late 2025, the facility will mark a significant step in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported medicines.
Emzor’s Mission for Self-Sufficiency
During a media tour of Emzor’s state-of-the-art facility in Sagamu, Okoli underscored the project’s strategic importance, calling on the Nigerian government to support local pharmaceutical production.
“Our API plant, scheduled for completion in 2025, is a testament to our commitment to self-sufficiency. But we cannot do this alone. The government must recognize the strategic importance of local pharmaceutical production and provide the necessary support,” she stated.
With over 70% of Nigeria’s pharmaceuticals currently imported, Okoli stressed that local production could ease pressure on the naira, lower costs, and make essential medicines more accessible. She also warned against neglecting the sector, stating that without proper investment, Nigeria risks losing its brightest talents to other countries.
Despite these challenges, Okoli remains unwavering in her belief in Nigeria’s potential:
“Nigeria is a great place. No matter what happens, we remain a nation of leaders, honest people, and problem solvers. Emzor was built on this foundation, and we will continue to rise.”
Emzor’s Legacy in African Healthcare
Founded in 1984, Emzor has grown from a small retail pharmacy, which Okoli started in 1977, into one of Nigeria’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers. Today, the company produces over 140 high-quality drugs, including:
•Analgesics
•Vitamins & supplements
•Anti-malarials & antibiotics
•Cardiovascular drugs
With a distribution network spanning 25 countries and three manufacturing facilities, Emzor is a key player in Africa’s pharmaceutical industry, exporting to nations across the continent.
Okoli’s Leadership and Global Recognition
Stella Okoli’s entrepreneurial success has cemented her status among Africa’s wealthiest women, with an estimated net worth of over $80 million. Under her leadership, Emzor has attracted international partnerships, including a USAID-backed collaboration to produce medical-grade groundnut paste—a key ingredient in treating malnourished children.
This initiative not only provides locally sourced therapeutic food for Nigerian children but also empowers local farmers, creating a sustainable supply chain.
With the $23 million API plant set to transform pharmaceutical manufacturing in Nigeria, Stella Okoli’s Emzor continues to push boundaries, driving the nation toward self-sufficiency in healthcare and cementing its status as an African pharma powerhouse.
