In a significant move to enhance its operational efficiency and reduce reliance on external power sources, BUA Group—the Nigerian industrial conglomerate led by billionaire Abdul Samad Rabiu—has entered a strategic partnership with India’s Green Power International PVT Limited to develop a 20-megawatt gas-powered plant.
The agreement, signed at BUA’s Middle East office in Dubai, will see Green Power International design and construct the dedicated facility to support BUA’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) operations. This project is a core part of BUA’s broader strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency and secure a reliable power supply for its expanding industrial activities.
Abdul Samad Rabiu, Founder and Chairman of BUA Group, emphasized the importance of in-house energy generation: “This partnership is a strategic step in strengthening our infrastructure and ensuring our production facilities are powered efficiently and sustainably. Reliable energy is fundamental to driving industrial growth.”
Green Power International, a specialist in gas and liquid fuel power systems, brings technical expertise to the project. The plant will not only optimize BUA’s LNG operations but also contribute to reducing operational costs and enhancing overall productivity.
This initiative is the latest in a series of strategic investments by BUA aimed at deepening Nigeria’s industrial capacity. Recently, the group announced a modern palm oil refinery in partnership with Sweden’s Alfa Laval, with a capacity of 1,000 tons per day, aimed at reducing palm oil imports and supporting local farmers.
Additionally, BUA has commissioned a major plasterboard manufacturing plant in Port Harcourt and joined forces with Austria’s Starlinger to establish a polypropylene bag production facility capable of producing 600 million bags annually.
Through these expansions, BUA Group continues to underscore its commitment to backward integration, local content development, and sustainable industrialisation—all hallmarks of Abdul Samad Rabiu’s vision for a self-reliant African economy.
With a net worth of $4.7 billion, Rabiu remains one of the most influential industrialists in Africa, driving projects that combine economic value with social impact.
