Nigerian oil mogul Wale Tinubu continues to solidify his position as a leading figure in Africa’s energy industry with Oando Plc’s latest achievement—emerging as the operator of Angola’s KON 13 Block. This milestone is a critical step in the company’s strategic goal of increasing oil production capacity to 100,000 barrels per day, part of its broader global expansion agenda.
Breaking New Ground in Angola
The National Agency for Petroleum, Gas, and Biofuels (ANPG), Angola’s upstream petroleum regulator, recently announced the results of the Limited Public Tender for Block KON 13, located in the Kwanza Onshore Basin. Oando Energy was awarded a 45% operator stake in the block, with an additional 10% available for non-operating companies through a restricted competition process.
The tender, which began on May 24, 2024, and concluded with bidding on September 3, adhered to strict financial and technical requirements as outlined in Presidential Decree No. 86/18.
For Oando, this victory reflects years of ambition to establish a foothold in Angola’s hydrocarbon sector. Back in 2014, Wale Tinubu revealed plans to expand into Angola and Mozambique. However, financial challenges at the time slowed the company’s pan-African aspirations.
A Decade-Long Vision Realized
Oando’s recent acquisition of Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited (NAOC Ltd) from Italian oil giant Eni S.p.A. has transformed its production and financial standing. This move doubled the company’s output to 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, securing a 40% stake in key oil mining leases (OMLs 60, 61, 62, and 63) and full ownership of the assets under the NEPL/NAOC/OOL Joint Venture.
By enhancing output through new drilling projects and implementing improved security measures, Oando has restored investor confidence, resulting in a surge in share prices and market valuation.
Expanding Beyond Africa
Oando’s ambitions stretch far beyond Africa. In addition to its success in Angola, the company is among three finalists vying for Trinidad and Tobago’s $15 billion Petrotrin refinery. Securing this deal would establish Oando as a major player in the Caribbean energy market, further cementing its global presence.
The Future of Oando
With its growing portfolio and strategic acquisitions, Oando Plc under Wale Tinubu’s leadership is on track to redefine African energy’s role on the global stage. The KON 13 Block win marks not only a significant milestone for the company but also a testament to Tinubu’s resilience and vision.
This latest achievement strengthens Oando’s position as a key player in the oil and gas industry, showcasing the potential of African-led businesses to compete and excel on the global front. Wale Tinubu remains a trailblazer in the energy sector, paving the way for future investments and partnerships across the world.
