Lemfi, the fast-growing financial services platform for immigrants, has officially completed the acquisition of Irish currency exchange platform Bureau Buttercrane, marking a significant step in its European expansion strategy. With regulatory approval from the Central Bank of Ireland, the deal grants Lemfi the ability to operate across the European Economic Area (EEA) under an Irish financial license.

This acquisition is a strategic regulatory move, ensuring that Lemfi remains compliant with European financial regulations post-Brexit. Despite already holding a British license through its 2021 acquisition of RightCard, Lemfi previously faced restrictions on processing transactions within the EEA. By securing an Irish license, the company now gains passporting rights, enabling seamless operations across multiple European markets.

“Rather than focusing on [Buttercrane’s] tech stack or profitability, the acquisition was driven by our need to secure the right regulatory framework for our expansion,” said Ridwan Olalere, CEO of Lemfi. “We already have the technology; this was a strategic acquisition to ensure smooth and compliant operations across Europe.”

Regulatory Approval and Strategic Expansion

The acquisition comes just 21 days after Lemfi announced its European operations through a partnership with Dutch financial services provider, Modulr Finance. According to Olalere, the partnership was a temporary measure while awaiting final approval from the Central Bank of Ireland.

That approval came quickly due to Lemfi’s strong compliance record and a solid team familiar with international regulatory processes.

“If another European regulator has already approved you in the past, it works in your favor because it shows credibility,” Olalere added.

With the deal completed, Lemfi plans to establish Dublin as its European headquarters, hire local staff, and deepen its engagement with European regulators.

Lemfi Targets the $64 Billion European Remittance Market

With a monthly transaction volume of over $1 billion, Lemfi is already a major player in the remittance space across Asia and Africa. Now, the company is setting its sights on Europe’s $64 billion remittance market, where millions of immigrants rely on seamless, cost-effective cross-border transfers.

Expanding into multiple international markets is essential for remittance startups, but Europe presents unique challenges.

“Europe is a big, complicated market with different payment methods, rules, and preferences across countries. We’re optimistic about growth, but it’s a challenging landscape,” Olalere explained.

For instance, payment methods vary widely by country—in France, many consumers rely on Carte Bancaire, a domestic system not linked to Visa or Mastercard. Entering the market without supporting such local payment methods would limit Lemfi’s ability to serve a significant portion of users.

A Well-Funded Competitor in the Remittance Space

Lemfi’s European push comes at a time when competition in the remittance sector is heating up. However, with the backing of a recent $53 million Series B funding round, the company is well-capitalized to challenge competitors head-on.

For remittance startups, expansion into multiple markets is key to revenue growth, as it allows them to serve more global money corridors—such as U.S. to India, or Europe to Africa. By positioning itself as a one-stop solution for seamless international money transfers, Lemfi aims to strengthen customer loyalty and capture a larger share of the global remittance market.

With its latest acquisition, Lemfi is not just expanding—it’s securing its position as a dominant force in the future of cross-border payments.
