LemFi, a fast-growing remittance-focused fintech startup, has announced a $53 million Series B funding round to support its ambitious plans for expansion into Europe. The funding round was led by Highland Europe, a London-based growth-stage investment firm, with participation from Endeavor Catalyst, Left Lane Capital, Palm Drive Capital, and Y Combinator. This latest funding brings LemFi’s total capital raised to $85 million, cementing its position as a major player in the global remittance market.

Driving Global Expansion

LemFi, which serves African immigrants across 22 countries, aims to use this funding to enhance its global payment network, acquire additional licenses, and provide hyper-localized services to its users. As part of its expansion strategy, the company is set to launch operations in Europe next month, following the acquisition of an unnamed Republic of Ireland-based company and a strategic partnership with Modulr.

The expansion into Europe aligns with LemFi’s broader vision of serving customers in 27 send-from markets while facilitating remittances to 20 recipient countries. Additionally, LemFi plans to invest heavily in talent acquisition to sustain its rapid growth, with the company currently employing over 300 staff across Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia.

Strong Foundations and Growth Milestones

Founded in 2019 by Nigerian entrepreneur Ridwan Olalere and European co-founder Rian Cochran, LemFi has experienced exponential growth since its inception. After entering the US market in 2023, LemFi expanded into significant remittance corridors in Asia, including China, India, and Pakistan, in 2024. These markets have been pivotal to LemFi’s success, contributing $160 million in monthly transaction processing volume (TPV), with a growth rate of 30% month-on-month.

The company’s expansion strategy has been bolstered by hiring senior executives from top global companies such as Terrapay, DeliveryHero, and OPay. This strategic recruitment has enabled LemFi to scale its operations and refine its service offerings to meet the demands of its growing customer base.

A Booming Business Model

LemFi generates revenue through transaction fees and foreign exchange spreads. Its robust business model has enabled the startup to process an impressive $1 billion in monthly payment volume, a significant increase from $2 billion in annual transaction volume recorded in 2023. Over the past two years, LemFi has doubled its user base, revenue, and transaction volume, highlighting its strong market adoption and operational efficiency.

Looking Ahead

With the Series B funding, LemFi is set to introduce localized services, including launching a card for customers in the US, UK, and Canada. The company’s focus on innovation and customer-centric solutions continues to drive its mission to empower immigrants worldwide by making cross-border payments seamless and accessible.

LemFi’s remarkable growth story, led by Ridwan Olalere and his team, underscores the potential of African-founded startups on the global stage. As it scales new heights, LemFi is not only redefining the remittance landscape but also setting a benchmark for African innovation and entrepreneurship.
